Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi contains the settings you need to connect to networks/hotspots and manage your data usage.  These settings are standard Android functions.  Settings available under Wireless & Network are:

> Connecting to a Wi-Fi Network

Connecting to a Wi-Fi Network

The Wi-Fi capability of your SHIELD allows you to connect to the Internet wherever there is a wireless access point or Hotspot available (such as a coffee shop).  During Android Setup, you are walked through connecting your SHIELD to your home wireless router.

Certain types of routers provide better results.  At a minimum, use an 802.11a/g router.  However, the 802.11n dual band router is recommended.  The 802.11n 2x2 MIMO game-speed Wi-Fi provides high-bandwidth, ultra-fast wireless for seamless game streaming.  To view available wireless access points or Hotspots in your immediate area, go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wi-Fi.

All access points and hot spots are listed on the screen.  Wi-Fi displays a list of networks within range of your device and indicates the signal strength.  Select a network to connect that has the strongest signal strength.  Once you have successfully connected, your device remembers the network and will automatically connect whenever it is within range.

Some account names will be listed with no icon but they do show as "Not in range."  This means they are out of the wireless range for connections but they are detected by SHIELD.

Adding a Network

If the network you would like to join does not have a public broadcast SSID, you can add it by tapping the + sign in the upper ribbon.  The Add Network screen displays for you to add the SSID number and configure your connection.  The Service Set Idientifier (SSID) is a readable text string commonly referred to as the network name.

NoteAt this time, Android does not support enterprise networks using LEAP (Cisco Wi-Fi protocol).

Wi-Fi Protection Setup

From the Wi-Fi ribbon, tap the Wi-Fi Protection icon to automatically establish a secure connection to your home network.

NoteThe Wi-Fi Protection setup process was created to allow home users who know little of wireless security to easily add new devices to an existing network without entering complicated configurations.

The Wi-Fi Protection setup automatically secures the connection between your home router and your SHIELD device.

Wi-Fi Options

Tap the Wi-Fi Options icon on the right side of the ribbon to display a list of options.

Scan

Tapping Scan begins a scan of any available networks within the SHIELD's range.  The displayed network list is updated with any new networks found.

WPS PIN Entry

Selecting the WPS Pin Entry is another way to secure your connection to your home router.

Wi-Fi Direct

Wi-Fi Direct, previously known as Wi-Fi Peer-to-Peer (P2P), allows Wi-Fi devices to connect to exchange data without going through a network.  Tap Search for Devices.  All devices within range are listed.  Select the device to directly transfer data.

Advanced

NoteHaving Network notification and Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep will use more battery power than normal.  However, turning Wi-Fi off during sleep (notifications and updates are not received when Wi-Fi is off) is the number one way to save power.
